Between a Rock and a Hard Place

March 12th, 2011 § 0 comments § permalink

127 Hours: Between a Rock and a Hard Place is the autobiography of Aron Ralston. The book recounts Ralston’s experience being trapped in Blue John Canyon  in the Utah desert and how he was forced to amputate his lower right arm with a low-quality multitool (a dull knife) in order to free himself after his arm became trapped by a boulder.

The book goes back and forth, in alternating chapters, between his past experiences and his entrapment in the canyon.

Ralston’s ordeal is the subject of the 2010 Danny Boyle film 127 Hours, starring James Franco.

Learn a third language

December 30th, 2010 § 0 comments § permalink

If you’re wondering what to add to your New Year’s Resolutions list, you might consider learning a third language. There are many languages to choose from, ranging from Spanish, German, to French. Personally, I’m recommending Japanese. Why? you might ask. When you are pursuing a goal, it is vital that you have a strong enough “why” to drive you to the next level and subsequently accomplish your mission. So, I will give you several “WHY”s if you’re not convinced.

  • Japan has one of the largest economy in the world.

  • Japanese is a gateway to other Asian languages & cultures.

  • Japanese-speakers are one of the Internet’s largest language group.

  • You might find it useful when you visit/shop in Japan one day.

  • You have a better chance to get a Japanese girlfriend/boyfriend (just kidding!)

Here’s a book I would recommend to anyone who’s interested to learn basic/advanced Japanese.

Japanese for Dummies

And, it comes with an audio CD!

Arigatō, and ermm…Sayōnara!!

Sh*t My Dad Says by Justin Halpern

After being dumped by his longtime girlfriend, twenty-eight-year-old Justin Halpern found himself living at home with his seventy-three-year-old dad. Sam Halpern, who is “like Socrates, but angrier, and with worse hair,” has never minced words, and when Justin moved back home, he began to record all the ridiculous things his dad said to him:

ON THE MEDICINAL EFFECT OF BACON
You worry too much. Eat some bacon… What? No, I got no idea if it’ll make you feel better, I just made too much bacon.

ON MY BLOODY NOSE
What happened? Did somebody punch you in the face?!… The what? The air is dry? Do me a favor and tell people you got punched in the face.

“Do people your age know how to comb their hair? It looks like two squirrels crawled on their heads and started f**king.”

I can’t stop laughing after reading only a few page. This book is somewhat sweet, touching and sarcastic in a funny way. Made my day :D

Start Your Own Business

Start Your Own Business, Fifth Edition

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover. – Mark Twain

Little that we realize, we all have so much potential, hidden underneath ourselves. Instead of playing by the rules, (get a degree, look for a stable job with steady income, go home, and repeat the same routine over and over again) we can actually bend the rules a little bit. Of course, you need education and income to make a living. However, instead of being restricted in a 9 to 6 office hour staring at computer screen, you can choose, going after your dreams in your own path.

Starting a business is never easy, and will never be. Looking at the bright side, it is actually easier than it was 10 years ago, especially with the help of the Internet. Or, you can take a look at this book I’m recommending, Start Your Own Business, 5th edition.

I would say, this is a complete all-in-one book that will certainly inspire and boost your knowledge in starting up a business. Filled with numerous tips, ideas, and popular business quotes, this is among the best business book ever published, if not the best. Each chapter was revised (some were updated) in this fifth edition. Guidelines on how to to engage in the new media (online advertising, social media, etc.) were included too.

So, let’s stop the procrastination, and start taking action, now. (you can get the book here)

Given an opportunity, what type of business would you start? place a comment, and share your ideas.

The Founding of Facebook

The Accidental Billionaires by Ben Mezrich

The much anticipated movie, The Social Network, has just been released recently. Some of us may not know, the film was actually adapted from the book, The Accidental Billionaires by Ben Mezrich. The book reveals what had occurred behind the scenes, and follows how best friends Eduardo Saverin and Mark Zuckerberg spend their college life in Harvard and ultimately moving to Silicon Valley, to further expand Facebook.

The tagline, “you don’t get to 500 million friends without making a few enemies”, clearly define what Mark and Eduardo had to endure in founding Facebook, which ended with lawsuits and accusations. As a daily Facebook user, this book helps me to get to know the history behind what I’m using everyday. Glad to have this book.
